vessels & vases

Vessels are defined by the generally small opening that is smaller in diameter than the greatest diameter of the piece. Most vessels have a cover, lid, or finial. These are quite challenging to create, since the walls are thin, and the turner (me) cannot see the cut in progress! Vases are usually taller, making the internal cuts deeper and even more prone to chatter. Beautiful, though!

#2008-704 Vessel and Finial in Cherry, Tulipwood, and African Blackwood. First-Place winner;3-D category in the Cotton Mill Juried Art Show. This hollowed vessel is getting prettier with age (don't we all?)with the colors getting deeper and richer. With a shape reminiscent of a gourd, it's satiny-soft finish really catches the eye. The contrasting finial is a delight. approx. 6 1/2" dia. x 6" tall. [SOLD] In the collection of Susan W.

Vessel, Black Walnut, Black & White Ebony $170
#2007-719 This walnut vessel was made out of crotchwood (or a fork in the tree), which gives it a rich, deep, swirling grain pattern. The finial is Black & White Ebony, a very rare (and expensive) wood with striking contrasting grain in blacks, tans, even a hint of red. Approx. 5 ¼” dia. x 7” tall. $170

Vase, Box Elder [SOLD]
#2007-714 This Box Elder vase shows off the natural tans, slates, and bright reds of this gorgeous (and much coveted) wood. While some bleach this wood to take out the creamy tans, I prefer the incredible depth in the rays and figure of the natural wood. The holes are left behind by naturally occurring worms. This is an "Oh, wow" piece! Approx. 3¼ ” dia. x 6½” tall. [SOLD]

Lidded Box, Cedar with Garnet Chip
#2007-713 This was my first lidded box. The interior cedar is unfinished to keep the aroma coming. I added the Garnet chip to add to the appeal of this tiny box. My wife uses it every day for nighttime safekeeping of valuables. Finished with buffed carnauba wax. Approx 2 ½” dia. x 1 ½” tall. Artist’s private collection.
